About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Detroit, Ima Izakaya offers an authentic yet modern twist on traditional Japanese cuisine, blending an inviting izakaya atmosphere with a vibrant bar scene. Known for its thoughtfully crafted menu, this restaurant is a destination for those craving bold, nuanced flavors that both comfort and excite the palate.

The culinary spotlight here truly shines on their ramen—particularly the Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen and the Spicy Pork Tonkotsu Ramen, celebrated by diners for its buttery, tender pork that carries just the right hint of sweetness, creating a harmonious medley of taste. Each bowl is an immersive experience; rich, savory broth mingles effortlessly with springy ramen noodles, topped with a soft boiled egg and aromatic garnishes like scallions and chili threads, inviting you to savor every warm, comforting spoonful.

Beyond ramen, Ima Izakaya impresses with an array of small plates that reveal the kitchen’s creative flair. The Lamb and Shrimp Dumplings deliver a satisfying, delicate flavor, while the Spicy Tuna Sushi and Octopus with Wasabi provide punchy, fresh bites that excite the senses. For those seeking grilled delights, the Pork Belly Skewers and Karaage Tofu Bites offer tender textures infused with smoky, savory notes. Meanwhile, vibrant sides like Blistered Shishito Peppers add a touch of smoky heat and freshness to the table.

Signature udon soups such as the Golden Dashi Udon with its light, smoky broth and tempura crisps, or the Yuzu Miso Udon featuring porcini and yuzu for an earthy yet citrusy finish, showcase the kitchen’s dedication to balancing traditional and modern flavors. The option to customize with add-ons like avocado, kimchi, or soft eggs lets guests tailor dishes to their tastes, enhancing every bite.

Don’t overlook the dessert menu—brace yourself for the delicately crafted Coconut Tofu Custard adorned with blueberry, lemon, cocoa crisps, and mint. It’s a refreshing, silky finale that gently cleanses the palate and lingers in memory.

The atmosphere at Ima Izakaya perfectly complements its food—cozy and modern with a lively buzz, it’s an ideal spot for a casual night out or an intimate date. Guests consistently praise the warm, attentive service and the beautifully presented dishes that feel both artful and approachable. Whether you’re enjoying small plates during happy hour or settling in for a hearty bowl of ramen, the experience feels personal and inviting.

Some visitors note that the seating tends to be snug, especially for couples seated near others, but the overall ambiance remains welcoming and relaxed. Parking can be a consideration, but the culinary rewards inside more than make up for it. The drink menu, featuring creative cocktails like the Midori Colada, rounds out the evening perfectly, offering a refreshing counterpoint to the bold flavors on the plate.

Ima Izakaya stands out in Detroit’s dining scene as a must-visit for those who appreciate thoughtfully prepared Japanese fare with an innovative edge. From the first sip of broth to the final bite of dessert, this gem delivers depth, warmth, and a genuine love for bold, balanced flavors that stays with you long after you leave.

Vibes, food, and service were immaculate. I recommend the Spicy Pork Tonkatsu Ramen at this location has THE BEST pork you will ever taste in America. The pork was buttery and tender with a hint of sweetness. Dish is a 9/10 once you stir it and I actually added the vinegar sauce from the dumplings we got to add an extra element of flavor. The shrimp and scallion dumplings were mid and my sister gave her Chicken Katsu Curry 8.5/10. Honestly this is a great spot to come to for whatever you eat simply to be at sultry spot with good music that sets the tone for a fun night! Music was HipHop pop R&B and some indie. Genuinely good music - thank you to the host! Thank you to our server Jacqueline!!

Best ima among all ima in Detroit. Sample platter is a must. Everything is well grilled and tasty. Ramen wasn’t as salty as the different ima is. Priced well. Expect to spend around 30-40$ a person with drinks. Could probably skip mochi nothing special but the combination of the matcha ice cream and brownies was delightful. Only hindrance to this place is parking

We’ve ventured to this location 2 times for a date night and we were seated at the same small table each time. ITS NOT VERY PRIVATE as you’re seated next to other couples. More spacious of you have a bigger party. Service is good. Food is good. The dumpling are amazing.

We went in during happy hour before a concert. We were seated immediately and were able to put in our orders quickly. They came out pretty fast one after the other. We ordered a lot of small plates to try and most were good. We loved the edamame, it was so tasty! The corn was a bit disappointing as it was one tiny piece on a skewer. I thought it would belong on the robata grill part of the menu so a bit misleading. We both ordered ramen and they weren't bad at all. I got the ginger tori with chicken and my friend got the yuzu miso with short rib. It was very filling and satisfying. We liked the dessert also, a bit of a different take on a warm brownie Sunday with green tea ice cream instead of vanilla which was interesting. It was a bit dim inside and got crowded soon after we sat but there was always someone cleaning up our finished plates to give us more room as the next dish came out and we appreciated that. Overall, I would come back to try some other dishes that I didn't get a chance to this time as their entire menu was interesting

CATERING! I recently hired Ima to cater a party I hosted and it was simply outstanding! I didn’t expect anything less of course given how wonderful the food always is when I eat at the restaurant, but the freshness of it being catered really wowed me. It tasted restaurant fresh, like they just cooked it and walked it out of the kitchen, except they had to pack it up, drive it to my event and then set it up and it tasted just as amazing. Ryan was wonderful to work with when ordering, he helped me build the perfect menu. The delivery was super prompt, and Ryan & Mike who were both so great did all of the set up with the food, chafers and all, which was a lifesaver. Their attention to detail with everything was spot on. We had miso sesame cucumbers, glazed pork bao buns, edamame, Karaage chicken rice bowl, chilled sesame noodles with shrimp, sesame butter yaki udon and pork belly. All equally amazing. Highly recommend them for catering!

I love Ima! Great options for vegans. Their tofu taste like chicken! I got a few things and highly recommend trying whatever catches your eye. Everything I tasted was a hit. If I’m ever back in town I’d love to try their Japanese curry.

The food menu had a great variety of options and we tried several appetizers. Most were very tasty and just the right portion. Decent cocktail menu with a full bar. The place is a bit on the smaller side and the tables are pretty close to each other. It was quite loud inside on a Friday night dinner service.
